Delhi Awakens to Dangerous Smog Post Diwali
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" level.

Multiple areas of the capital recorded an AQI above 500, which equals a tenfold increase over the recommended level recommended by the global health authority.

For the past four years, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during Diwali due to their major role to the hazardous haze that covers the city as colder weather approaches.

Many air quality sensors throughout the capital showed pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst measurements observed during the festival in at least recent memory.

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during Diwali also sparked a controversy with adjacent the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles coming from India following the festivities.

The dangerously high readings of pollution in the capital have persisted as a major problem for more than 15 years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Around the festival period, the levels of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been documented to shoot up to seventy percent above the peak readings ever measured in China's capital, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated city.

This crisis in the city is attributed to a combination of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, building projects, waste incineration and smoke from farm burning in nearby areas of Punjab and Haryana.
In these regions, rural residents illegally burn crop residue to expedite field preparation, generating hazardous smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.

Public health and economic impact on the roughly thirty-three million people calling home the capital region is substantial, according to multiple studies.
This pollution leads to increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to cancer.
Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for approximately 10k early deaths each year in the city.
