Patients Discontinuing Slimming Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who come off new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have come off the medication describe a intense return of hunger.

"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described a patient.

The struggle is compounded if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
